This week's activity is to read the news about Coronavirus and then have an online discussion. (Make sure you use your real name when you post so that you get credit.) Green underlined text is a hyperlink so just click it.
1. 2 pts. Read and watch the following. https://junior.scholastic.com/pages/news/2019-20/are-we-ready-for-the-next-pandemic.html (Password is ELProcks.) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dSQztKXR6k0 2. 5 pts. Write one paragraph (RACES) answering the following questions in the comment section of this blog: Were Utahns prepared for the Coronavirus outbreak? What did we do well? What should we improve in the case of another pandemic? Explain using details from the article, video and your personal experience. 3. 3 pts. Respond to at least one other person's paragraph.
Creative Pursuits: Finish researching your topic if you haven't. Remember, your topic should be scaled down so that you are teaching something specific on your two pages. You can always research and learn more, but make sure that you have a general idea of what the reader will learn after they have read your pages. For example, if my topic was tectonic plates, then I could narrow down my topic to the three different ways the tectonic plates move.

I think that we Utahns were prepared for this pandemic. I think this because we closed down schools, Sports leagues and other major gatherings very quickly. I believe that we could improve what we did by realizing that this disease spreads very quickly and it seems that we did not listen the best we could. Some people were careless and thought that this disease was not dangerous at all. According to the YouTube video “Why Fighting The Coronavirus Depends on You”, If we keep our distance and everybody does their part, then we will have less deaths and less people infected. I think that there are many things we could do better but that we handled this pandemic very well and that after this experience, we will be ready for the next pandemic.

I agree with Gavin Whitchurch's paragraph, You said that social distancing is making a huge impact on the amount of cases. I agree with this because this was what made people start to stay home and realize that this disease is deadly. because of this, people are traveling less and being more carful around others.

I agree with Whiteman Robins that if we prepare and distance each other, we can prevent death and more infections.

The Coronavirus, also known as Covid-19, is a pandemic that has originated from China. In my opinion, Utahns have been overreacting about this issue. I don’t know why everytime I go to the supermarket, I can’t buy paper towels. In pure honesty, Utah was slightly under prepared, and busy panicking. Instead of making angry facebook posts about it; They should have been busy signing petitions for the people who do have the virus, and making sure that their stores don’t take advantage to the situation, and give out products in big proportions. What we did well was working on online schooling and shutting down the schools for an ideal period of time, because school is the worst place to be during a pandemic that spreads so quickly from as little as 1 person. A few things that we could improve in case of another pandemic rising, what we could improve would be working on only selling necessary proportions of supplies. These are all of my opinions about Covid-19, based on the facts and results that I’ve seen, and have been portrayed all over the media.

I agree with Auzeen Tashznizi. People are overreacting. They are too busy panicking, and are not able to get anything accomplished.

I agree with Auzeen Tashznizi that the Uathns weren't that prepared. The government shut everything down, but the citizens weren’t prepared in the way they could do good. Currently, my family is running low on toilet paper because people think that having the most toilet paper will protect you from COVID-19. Utahns having been pretty irrational.

I agree with Rory Bayly because Utah did react fast to the pandemic and started social distancing.

I believe that the state of Utah was prepared for the Corona virus because we knew about it much sooner than other people. For example, China (were the virus started) is much further from Utah so we had enough time to start social distancing. The results from Utah’s action, as of now, that only one person has passed away in Utah from the Corona virus. So if this happens again we know to social distant ourself as soon as possible.

I think Covid-19 has shocked everyone but little do people remember is that the flu and other things can be prevented with a little hand washing and social distancing. I think we people in Utah were ready for this virus if we keep this up we can keep Coronavirus numbers down

I think we were quite prepared for the pandemic. Countries in Asia and Europe were hit first, and that gave us a chance to prepare before it came to Utah. We shut down schools and restaurants, and that is making a large difference in the number of cases in Utah. There are currently 298 confirmed cases of Covid-19 in Utah, and our preparation definitely made an good impact. In New York State there have been over 25,000 cases, and that number is growing by the minute. I think that people in Utah are overreacting. In the article "Are We Ready for the Next Pandemic," It tells how some people are stocking up on food and other materials, but some people are taking it too far. They are stocking up on water and toilet paper like it's the end of the world. There hasn't been a pandemic since the flu outbreak of 1918, and I believe that may be one of the major reasons why people are overreacting, as this is completely unfamiliar to everybody. Social distancing is helping, though. UV rays kill the coronavirus, so the virus will likely die out in the summer.

I believe that Utahns were somewhat prepared. We started social distancing pretty soon and were closing off parks and recreation centers. People did start stocking up on food, and that can be good, but was buying 20 packs of bottled water and toilet paper really being prepared? Also, traveling between states isn’t off limits yet. In the video it stated that it could be spread by anyone that was in contact. And focusing more on Utah, we should limit travel between the counties as well. My mom works with homelessness, and currently her boss is rushing to find places for all the homeless people who could be at risk of COVID-19. In conclusion, I think that Utah was prepared in some ways, but mentally, the citizens of Utah might have not been.

I think that Utah is prepared for this pandemic. We had time to react to all this because it didn't start here. We have shut down restaurants, schools, and large public events. On March 11, the World Heath Organization declared the virus as a pandemic. I think that people are unsure of what to do. (including buying toilet paper) The article "Are We Ready for the Next Pandemic" states that people should stock up on food, medicine, and household items to be prepared if the stores shut down.
